Lately in First Grade....

(1)
The past two weeks in First Grade we have been talking about the skill of inferencing.

We practice doing this daily. I would hold up pictures and the students would have to use what they already knew plus the clues in the pictures to decide what was happening and why.  It's a very hard skill for 6 year olds, but by the end they were rock stars. There were also some fabulous ideas I found here in "blog land" that we did as well.

First, we did one of the amazing Cara Caroll's inference projects using the kids' favorites, "No David!"
We read the book and inferred what was going on each page.

Next, the kids had to choose one page from the book and infer what was David doing and why.
They turned out pretty cute!

We also did one of Babbling Abby's inferencing activities - "What's in my teacher's bag?"

We examined what was in my handbag that day and the kids had to infer why I had those items.
They then chose 2 of the items and wrote about them.

(2)
We also started learning about past and present presidents this week.
We ended the week with a president tree map.

We also made little George Washington faces and wrote about him.

(3)
In writing this week we started procedural writing.
To start, the kids and I had a "shared experience" of making chocolate milk.
They thought it was the coolest thing ever.

After we made the chocolate milk we made a flow map.

Next, each table had to make their own flow maps on how to do something.
They had a blast and did a really good job!

The kids made flow maps on "How to get ready for school", "How to plant a seed", "How to give a dog a bath", "How to make your bed", "How to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich", and "How to make a gingerbread house".  After the flow maps, each group presented the class.  Next week we will turn their flow maps into writing.

Alright, I need to go clean my house and do Valentines!
Have a wonderful weekend and thanks for stopping by!

Our Love Story....

Today I am linking up with sweet Becky for her Valentines link-up.
1. How long have you and your significant other been together?
Nick and I have been together for 8 years.

2. How did you meet? {What's your "love" story?}

Nick and I met Freshman Year at ASU. I knew him from some fraternity parties and also of his not- so-great reputation. I always thought he was cute but also may or may not have been quoted as saying "I wouldn't touch him with a 10 foot pole". I was a good girl and him, not so much. Fast forward 4 years and he was President of his fraternity and I was President of my sorority. We saw a lot of each other at events and such. He was quite persistent and I agreed to go out on a date with him. (Anyone remember that stupid movie about the kids who cheated on their SAT's?) After that, we became inseparable.   It was a rough time because I lost some friends due to dating him and even my sister told my parents he was bad news. But I have to say, bad boys can change.

3. If married, how long have you been married?
Nick and I have been married for almost 6 years!
We will celebrate our anniversary on March 11th.

4. If you are married, where did you get married at? Big or small wedding?
We were married in Scottsdale, Arizona. I think the wedding was probably medium sized. We were one of our first friends married and it was pretty soon after graduating so we had a lot of high school and college friends. It's funny how after the years pass I look back at the wedding and laugh at some of the people we invited. It was like a big Pike and Theta date party.

5. Do you have any nick-names that you call one another? Do share!
When were first started dating the "Hello Moto" commercials were everywhere. For some reason we started calling each other "Moto". Who knows why, but it stuck.

6. Name 3 things you love most about your honey.
1) I love how he is ALWAYS positive and optimistic.

2) I love how continues to teach me things every day.

3) I love how I seem to fit perfectly in his arms.

7. Tell us how he proposed?
He proposed on Easter Sunday at my parents' house.  We all went to church and came home to exchange Easter baskets.  Nick gave me a basket full of eggs. Each egg was numbered so that I would open them in order.  Inside each egg was a note written about why he loved me.  The last egg said to "look under the grass". There it said- "Will you marry me?". It was perfect because my whole family was there- from my baby nephew to my sweet Granddaddy.

8. Is he a flowers and teddy bear kind of guy for v-day, or strawberries, champagne, and rose petals?
Nick is more of a flowers and champagne guy for Valentines Day.
We don't go big on Valentines day at all!

9. Are you a sunset dinner on the beach kind of girl, or pop a movie in and relax on the couch?
Oh I am definitely a pop a movie in and relax kind of girl. Maybe I used to be more a sunset dinner girl, but the older I get, the more I appreciate just being together.

10. Tell us one thing you'd like to do with your significant one day. If you could do anything? Go anywhere?
I would love to go back to Hawaii together.

11. Tell us what you plan on doing on this Valentine's Day.
Not much! After a long day of Valentines day fun in first grade, I'm sure I will be pretty pooped! We will probably just go out to dinner and watch some dvr! We are so exciting, I know.

12. Are you asking for anything this Valentine's day?
Maybe a card? I don't have high expectations for Valentines day!

13. Give us one piece of advice of keeping a relationship strong and full of love.
Laugh together. Don't forget why you fell in love with each other. Compromise. Take time out for each other. Say I love you.

14.  Show us a picture of what love means to you.
I love my boys.

Our Weekend

This weekend has been pretty lazy...and I'm totally okay with that!

Friday Night
Reagan had a good day at school. Whew. Thank you Lord. He has not been napping at school and instead- whispering to all the girls in the class during nap time. It was 9 days of no nap! Which made for a really tired little man at home.  So Friday, he finally napped. Halleluja! To celebrate we went to the library and I let him pick out 5 movies and books for the weekend.

So that evening we just watched movies and relaxed.

Saturday
I attended a bridal shower for my friend Rachel. Our friend Holly hosted it and did a great job.  She loved the color scheme of the Gender Reveal Party I did for Meg, so she used it as inspiration for the shower.  Everything was beautiful.

It was an "Around the Clock" shower which was so fun! The guests were all assigned a time and had to give a gift that could be used at that time. So cute. I was assigned 8:00 pm and did a basket full of ice cream sundae supplies.  I wish I had taken a picture because it turned out pretty cute.

I did ice cream bowls from Sur La Table:

ice cream spoons from Sur La Table:

an ice cream scoop
and sundae goodies:

Here is a picture of all of us at the shower!

Saturday Night
Saturday night we let Reagan choose what he wanted to do.  He chose the mall. So we ate at the food court and played in the kids playground area. Driving there he was all about riding the train around the mall and doing the merry-go-round. But once we were there he just kept saying "No, thank you". I think he was having too much fun running around with the other kids. After the mall we went to Best Buy and got Reagan a new game for his Innotab. He is so in love with his "work".

Superbowl Sunday
I had all intentions to take Reagan to the movies to see Beauty and the Beast this morning but was so disappointed to see it wasn't showing anywhere in Scottsdale. Weird, right? So we did pretty much nothing! We read, watched movies, I did progress reports, and Nick currently has the Super Bowl on. My Dad and a couple of my friends are there, but other than that I don't have a lot invested in it. (Not like last year... Boo!) I'm excited for the halftime show, I can tell you that much!
Hope you had a great weekend!
